Cervicogenic Headache
Cervicogenic headaches present very similar to migraines, but have a few distinct differences. They are typically one-sided and brought on by movements of the neck. These can be a result of decreased neck mobility, trigger points in the muscles around the neck and shoulders, stress, lack of sleep, poor hydration or poor nutrition. Refer to chart for how to differentiate between a cervicogenic headache and a migraine.
Physical Therapy can help treat cervicogenic headaches by restoring joint mobility, release muscle tension and strengthening appropriate muscles to promote stability of the neck leading to decreased tension of muscles and decreased presence of painful trigger points.
